Thales Underwater Systems (TUS), formerly known as Thomson Marconi Sonar, is an international defence manufacturer specialising in sonar systems for submarines, surface warships and aircraft, as well as communications masts and systems for submarines.

Thales Energy Saving Program

In 2012 Thales Templecombe (based in Somerset) embarked on an energy-saving program to reduce Co2 emissions from its site. The site already had an EF20 3.2kVA frequency converter but was keen to pursue further savings and made contact with Powervamp to facilitate the request.

Powervamp calculated the additional potential energy savings from installing a larger frequency converter and fed the data back. Thales accepted the proposal and ordered an EF33 50kVA, EF33 20kVA and a further EF20 3.2kVA unit as well as a full maintenance contract for the site.

EF33 & EF20

Fast forward to 2015, where Thales Stockport had been carrying out a similar energy-saving exercise. After liaising with the Templecombe site, Thales Stockport contacted Powervamp to request a site survey on their current 5 x rotary converters. The survey would include measuring the rooms where the rotary units were located to understand the logistics of replacing them as well as the actual savings involved.

‘A further order for 2 x EF33 SFC (60kVA and 80kVA) has now been placed and is currently in production’

A quote was prepared for 5 x EF33 systems to replace the rotary units based on a provisional 3-year swap-out plan. The first unit, a 150kVA EF33 SFC with bespoke low voltage, was delivered and installed earlier this year. A further order for 2 x EF33 SFC (60kVA and 80kVA) has now been placed and is currently in production with a view to being delivered October/November 2015.

The final 80kVA and 100kVA units are due to be reviewed in 2016 and will conclude the schedule for this energy-saving exercise. A maintenance contract is now in place at the Stockport site, and any future units will be included under this agreement.
